Interior Ministry Launches Police Performance Review After Death Inquiry
The Syrian Ministry of Interior has launched a formal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Mohamed Ghamira, a move that officials say will serve as the starting point for a comprehensive evaluation of police conduct across the country. The initiative, announced by Ministry spokesperson Nour al-Din al-Baba, aims to address specific concerns regarding law enforcement practices, particularly within the coastal province of Latakia.
Minister of Interior Anas Khattab issued an administrative order on Sunday establishing a specialized committee tasked with uncovering the exact causes and conditions related to the incident. According to al-Baba, the investigative committee has already arrived in the Al-Haffah area of Latakia, where it is currently conducting interviews with the family of the deceased and local residents. The committee is expected to conclude its field investigation within three days, a timeline the Ministry says underscores its commitment to achieving a fair and transparent outcome.
Addressing the public, the Interior Ministry spokesperson emphasized that the government does not shy away from its institutional responsibility in this matter. He urged observers to focus on the facts of the case, cautioning against the spread of exaggerated or inflammatory narratives. Al-Baba also confirmed that a neutral, professional medical committee will be formed to conduct a formal forensic examination of the deceased’s remains.

Al-Baba stated that the committee will assess the performance of police departments throughout Syria, with a particular focus on those in Latakia. During his visit to Al-Haffah, the Ministry spokesperson met with the Ghamira family to convey formal condolences. He reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to standing by the family, ensuring their rights are protected, and holding any individuals found responsible for misconduct or overreach to account. He further extended his appreciation to the authorities in Latakia and the Al-Haffah administration for their cooperation, while also commending the family of the deceased for their calm and responsible conduct throughout the ongoing process.
