Interactive ‘Shababik’ Theater Performance Held in Aleppo

The National Library in Aleppo hosted an interactive theatrical performance titled “Shababik” (Windows) on Friday as part of a series of cultural and social initiatives. Presented by the “Artists Citizens” foundation, the show aimed to highlight a range of contemporary social issues by utilizing a performance style centered on direct interaction with the audience.
The production featured three main dramatic scenes that explored critical topics, most notably the educational disparities between public and private schools, instances of societal discrimination, efforts to combat hate speech, and the importance of strengthening the role of women in Syrian society. The performance was distinguished by its use of interactive theater techniques, which allow audience members to intervene in the flow of events. Attendees participated by analyzing the scenes, proposing alternative solutions to the situations presented, and exchanging roles with the actors, all of which contributed to fostering a constructive social dialogue.
Diana Khayata, a Social Cohesion Advisor for the VNG International Syria program—which is funded by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs—emphasized the importance of such performances as vital platforms for showcasing the talents of Syrian youth. Khayata stated that these events provide a safe and significant space for presenting meaningful social messages and enhancing civil cohesion through direct dialogue and the exchange of opinions among different segments of society.
Participants in the event shared a positive consensus regarding the experience, noting its effectiveness in bridging the gap between sensitive social issues and daily reality. Asmaa al-Mahmoud, one of the attendees, explained that the direct and impactful nature of the performance helped promote a culture of dialogue and reinforced the human-centric messages of the work. Another participant, Rankine Koumo, noted that granting the audience a role in the decision-making process and allowing them to propose solutions during the show opens broader horizons for positive thinking regarding how to address existing social challenges.
This activity takes place at a time when cultural and civil institutions in Aleppo are working to activate the role of art in discussing real-world issues. Interactive theater has emerged as a significant tool for engaging citizens directly in shaping visions and initiatives aimed at developing society and strengthening its internal bonds.
