Homs University Launches Geophysical Signal Processing Training

The Center for Skills and Career Guidance at Homs University has launched a specialized training program titled “Signal Processing and its Geophysical Applications.” This initiative is part of the university’s ongoing efforts to enhance students’ practical skills and bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and the professional requirements of the oil and gas sector.
The training program is specifically designed for fourth and fifth-year students in the Department of Petroleum Engineering, as well as postgraduate students within the same department. Additionally, it is open to students from the Department of Geology at the Faculty of Science. The primary goal is to provide participants with exposure to the latest technologies utilized in processing geophysical data, which are essential for identifying oil reservoirs and understanding complex geological structures.
Dr. Mustafa Al-Masri, Director of the Center for Skills and Career Guidance at Homs University, explained that the program is being conducted in coordination with the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). He noted that the core objective is to leverage specialized scientific expertise to introduce students to modern technical developments, particularly in the fields of well drilling and the exploration of oil and gas resources.
The program instructor, engineer Bassam Al-Obeid, emphasized that the training focuses heavily on the practical aspect of the field. Students are being trained on the use of computers and specialized software packages designed for analyzing and processing geophysical data. The two-week program covers various stages of the professional workflow, ranging from the fundamental principles of signal processing to advanced practical applications. This approach is intended to equip students with the ability to handle field data and software analyses at a professional standard.
Participating students have expressed their appreciation for the initiative. Firas Al-Daraan, a fifth-year petroleum engineering student, highlighted the importance of these skills, noting that gaining proficiency in handling data from field equipment through sophisticated software is a foundational pillar for their future careers. He emphasized that such training is crucial given the increasing demand for qualified personnel in the fields of exploration and production.
This initiative aligns with the academic efforts of Homs University to develop national competencies and prepare students for their professional futures. By integrating academic education with modern technical applications, the university aims to ensure that its graduates are well-aligned with the specific needs of Syria’s energy sector and the geological sciences.
