Flood Prevention Measures Intensify in Al-Hasakah Province

Emergency and disaster management teams are intensifying field operations across Al-Hasakah province as part of a comprehensive strategy to enhance preventative readiness against floods during the rainy season.

Raed Al-Saleh, Minister of Emergency and Disaster Management, announced that the ministry is currently executing the second phase of its protection plan. This phase focuses primarily on the course of the Khabur River and its surrounding areas, following the successful completion of initial tasks in the Al-Ya’rubiyah and Tal Hamis regions.

Current field operations involve clearing the Khabur River bed and raising and reinforcing earth embankments in high-risk locations. These efforts aim to improve water flow within the river’s natural channel, preventing overflow into residential areas and agricultural lands. Such measures are intended to safeguard public and private property, as well as critical infrastructure throughout the province.

Minister Al-Saleh emphasized that these actions are guided by a policy of early preparation and prevention. He described the proactive protection of vulnerable areas as a fundamental responsibility of the ministry toward the local population. Al-Hasakah province faces natural challenges stemming from seasonal floods, particularly in areas near the Syrian-Iraqi border, where water from valleys and natural drainage channels flows. Additionally, the fluctuating levels of the Khabur River—the largest tributary of the Euphrates River in Syria—present ongoing risks.

The province experienced widespread flooding last March due to heavy rainfall, which submerged hundreds of homes in Al-Hasakah city neighborhoods, including Ghwayran, Al-Nashwa, Al-Maridian, and Al-Layliyah. These events prompted relevant authorities to intensify their response efforts to mitigate the impact of natural changes and reduce future consequences for community safety and the stability of vital areas in the province.

These field operations serve as a continuation of the emergency teams’ efforts to protect residential communities and agricultural projects, which represent the backbone of the local economy in Al-Hasakah. Engineering and technical crews are continuing to survey and fortify locations most threatened by rising water levels as part of an integrated plan to handle any emergencies that may arise during the upcoming rainy season.
