Faculty of Sharia Inaugurated in Hama Following Restoration

The Governor of Hama, Abdul Rahman Al-Sahian, officially inaugurated the newly restored Faculty of Sharia building in the Al-Murabit neighborhood of Hama on Sunday. The restoration project was completed through a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, the Foundation for the Care of Mosques and Sharia Institutions, and local community support as part of the ‘Fidaa li-Hama’ (Sacrifice for Hama) campaign.
Hazem Al-Obaisi, Secretary-General of Hama Governorate and Executive Director of the Fidaa li-Hama campaign, stated that the project was launched to implement the decree establishing the Faculty of Sharia within the University of Hama. He highlighted that this represents the first academic institution of its kind in the province dedicated to Sharia sciences. The facility was designed to include classrooms, lecture halls, and a prayer hall, as well as a specialized library—the first of its kind in the region. Further work is currently underway to construct an additional lecture hall to accommodate growing educational needs.
Muath Rihane, Director of Awqaf (Endowments) in Hama, emphasized that the new faculty addresses a long-standing demand from the local population. By establishing this facility, the university will spare students the hardship and financial costs of traveling to other provinces to pursue their studies in Sharia sciences.
Amjad Al-Shibli, head of the Foundation for the Care of Mosques and Sharia Institutions, provided details on the facility, which spans two floors with a total area of 3,700 square meters. The first floor covers 2,500 square meters, while the second encompasses 1,200 square meters. Al-Shibli noted that rehabilitation work began in late December 2025, adhering to high technical standards with direct support from the residents of Hama. He confirmed that the building is now fully prepared to accommodate up to 2,000 students.
Dr. Abdul Karim Qalb Al-Lawz, President of Hama University, announced that the faculty will commence its academic operations this year, welcoming an inaugural cohort of 300 to 400 students. The university plans to increase this capacity gradually over the coming years.
This initiative is part of the broader efforts of the Fidaa li-Hama campaign, which launched on November 22. To date, the campaign has successfully executed over 120 service projects, including vital improvements to water, sewage, electricity, and school infrastructure. The Faculty of Sharia project marks the campaign’s debut initiative within the higher education sector.
