Firefighters Extinguish Fuel Tanker Blaze on M4 Highway in Raqqa
Emergency response teams in Raqqa successfully brought a major fire under control on Friday following a collision involving two fuel-laden tankers. The incident occurred on the international M4 highway, a vital transit artery, in the vicinity of Ayoua village within the Zaidi region of Raqqa province.
According to Rami Al-Saloum, director of the Emergency and Disaster Management Directorate in Raqqa, local civil defense units were notified of the incident at approximately 4:00 PM. Given the remote location of the crash—situated roughly 70 kilometers from the nearest civil defense facility—a coordinated response was launched. Teams from Tel Abyad and Ras Al-Ain were deployed to provide support, allowing personnel to contain and eventually extinguish the inferno.
Preliminary reports regarding the casualties indicate that two individuals sustained injuries in the accident. One victim, whose injuries were described as serious, was transported to a medical facility by local civilians before the arrival of emergency crews. A second individual suffered from superficial burns, according to official statements.
Saad Fares, the director of the Tel Abyad region, provided further details regarding the circumstances of the collision. He noted that the two tankers were traveling from the direction of Al-Hasakah province when the impact occurred. The collision resulted in an immediate explosion of one of the vehicles, sparking a fire that required rapid intervention. Security personnel, including members of internal security forces, traffic police, and road security units, assisted the emergency teams in securing the site and managing the aftermath of the crash.
The M4 international highway remains a critical transportation corridor in northern and eastern Syria, facilitating the movement of cargo, commercial goods, and civilian vehicles between the provinces and the coastal regions. Due to the high volume of heavy transport and civilian traffic, authorities have emphasized the necessity of maintaining road safety standards and ensuring the prompt removal of wreckage following such incidents to prevent further disruptions to the flow of traffic.
