Elderly Man Killed in Traffic Accident in Tartus, Syria
An elderly man has succumbed to his injuries following a vehicular accident on the Sheikh Saad Bridge in the Syrian coastal governorate of Tartus. The incident, which took place on Sunday, occurred when a car lost control, resulting in the collision that ultimately claimed the victim’s life.
Local emergency response authorities confirmed that civil defense teams were dispatched to the site of the accident immediately upon receiving reports of the incident. Upon arrival, emergency responders provided the victim with initial medical stabilization before transporting him to a nearby hospital for urgent care. Despite these intervention efforts, the man later died due to the severity of the trauma sustained in the collision.
Following the rescue operation, personnel from the Directorate of Emergency and Disaster Management in Tartus remained on the scene to secure the area and manage the flow of traffic. These efforts were aimed at preventing secondary accidents and ensuring the safety of other motorists and pedestrians navigating the bridge, a critical transit point in the governorate.
This incident adds to a series of recent traffic safety challenges in the region. The provincial emergency directorate, led by Abdel Moneim Satif, has been increasingly tasked with responding to transport-related emergencies. Notably, in July, the department managed a separate accident on the key road connecting the cities of Safita and Tartus. In that instance, emergency teams were similarly deployed to stabilize victims and clear the roadway to maintain regional transit stability.
Road safety remains a persistent concern for local authorities in Tartus, particularly as transit infrastructure experiences increased pressure. The Directorate of Emergency and Disaster Management continues to prioritize rapid intervention and site management as primary strategies to mitigate the risks posed by such accidents to the general public. While investigations into the specific mechanical or environmental factors that led to the vehicle sliding on the bridge are typically part of standard post-incident procedures, the focus for the civil defense teams remains the preservation of life and the restoration of orderly traffic flow across the governorate’s primary thoroughfares.
