Family of Deceased Haffa Resident Calls for Justice in Official Inquiry
A formal investigation is underway following the death of 29-year-old Muhammad Husam al-Din Ghamira, who passed away after being detained at a police station in the city of Haffa, Latakia province. The case has prompted an urgent response from both local community leaders and state authorities, with a high-level probe currently assessing the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Dr. Issam Ghamira, director of the Haffa General Hospital and uncle of the deceased, stated that the family maintains full confidence in the judicial process. Speaking following a meeting in Haffa that included the regional police chief and the head of the local intelligence branch, Dr. Ghamira emphasized the community’s commitment to seeking justice through lawful channels and maintaining public order.
Providing details on the events leading to the tragedy, Dr. Ghamira explained that the deceased suffered from hemophilia. He noted that Muhammad Ghamira had complied with a police summons to report to the Haffa station. According to the family, the detainee was subjected to physical assault by police personnel, an act described by the family as a reprehensible individual incident. Following the alleged altercation, the young man’s health deteriorated rapidly.
Medical records indicate that the patient suffered a progressive cerebral hemorrhage, followed by neurological symptoms and an eventual lapse into a coma. Despite receiving urgent care at the hospital, his condition continued to worsen, compounded by renal failure, hypotension, and oxygen deprivation, which ultimately led to his death. Dr. Ghamira acknowledged the efforts of the Ministry of Interior and the local health directorate, stating that officials had assisted in securing the necessary medical supplies for treating his hemophilia, despite the scarcity of such medication. However, despite these medical interventions, his condition proved irreversible.
In response to the incident, the Minister of Interior, Anas Khattab, issued an administrative order earlier today establishing a specialized committee to conduct a thorough investigation. The committee is mandated to uncover the precise causes and circumstances of the death, with a requirement to submit their findings to the ministry within 72 hours. During the community meeting, senior security officials, including the police chief, reassured the family and village elders that those responsible for the incident would be held accountable according to the law.
Dr. Ghamira reiterated that the matter is now fully in the hands of the judiciary. He expressed the collective desire of the residents of Haffa to see the case resolved through the established legal framework, urging the community to remain calm and avoid any actions that could escalate the situation or allow the tragedy to be exploited.
