Aleppo Marks National Environment Day with Clean-up and Planting Drive

The city of Aleppo recently hosted an environmental awareness event as part of the celebrations for National Environment Day. The initiative, which featured a clean-up and tree-planting campaign, took place at the new Peace Park in the Aleppo Al-Jadida district.

Organized by the Aleppo Environment Directorate in partnership with the “Basma Amal” (Smile of Hope) Foundation, the project aimed to revitalize public green spaces and improve the environmental condition of the city’s parks.

Engineer Aya Daqqaq, head of the Awareness Department at the Environment Directorate, stated that the campaign focused on engaging children in practical activities, such as cleaning and planting new saplings. The goal is to instill a sense of responsibility toward the environment and public property in the younger generation. Daqqaq noted that the park had previously suffered from waste accumulation and a lack of basic infrastructure, prompting the installation of approximately ten new waste bins to ensure ongoing maintenance.

Sarah Alloush, the orphans’ supervisor at the Basma Amal Foundation, explained that the initiative, titled “Create a Memory,” saw participation from children sponsored by the organization. As a tribute to their late parents, each child planted a sapling and named it after a lost loved one. Alloush emphasized that the event serves a dual purpose: addressing environmental concerns while fostering a spirit of initiative and collective responsibility among the children toward their city.

Participating children expressed their enthusiasm for the project. Zakaria Obeid, one of the young participants, noted that the experience allowed them to learn the fundamentals of tree planting and proper waste management in public facilities, adding that they felt proud to contribute to the beautification of the park.

This initiative is part of broader efforts by local authorities in Aleppo to promote environmental awareness and community responsibility. By encouraging institutions and individuals to collaborate on protecting natural resources and reducing pollution, the campaign seeks to contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable environment for future generations within the province’s public spaces.
