Official Talks Held to Discuss Food Security Funding in Syria

Syrian Minister of Finance, Mohamed Yasser Berriyeh, held a meeting in Damascus with a delegation from the World Food Programme (WFP), led by Deputy Executive Director Matthew Hollingworth. The discussions focused on mechanisms for joint cooperation regarding financing and development initiatives within the country.
The talks centered on exploring opportunities to secure the necessary funding for programs implemented by the WFP in Syria. Furthermore, the meeting addressed the financial coordination required to bolster food security efforts and support agricultural development projects.
During the session, the WFP delegation outlined the key features of the Country Strategic Plan currently being prepared for the next four years. Representatives emphasized the importance of collaborating with relevant Syrian government authorities to ensure these plans align with national programs designed to improve the livelihoods of citizens. The delegation noted that the development of this strategy is being conducted in coordination with several Syrian ministries to achieve the best possible outcomes in food support and development sectors.
For its part, the Syrian side underscored the importance of strengthening partnerships with effective international organizations to ensure the sustainability of humanitarian and agricultural programs. This meeting is part of ongoing efforts to shift the focus of relief operations toward supporting projects that offer long-term developmental impact.
The World Food Programme, a United Nations agency, is recognized as one of the largest humanitarian organizations globally. Its core mandate is to combat hunger and provide emergency food and cash assistance. The organization supports millions of people in need across more than 80 countries, including Syria, which currently faces significant challenges regarding food security and its agricultural economy due to prevailing circumstances.
