Tartus University Expands Dentistry Postgraduate Facilities

Tartus University has announced the completion of an expansion and modernization project at its Faculty of Dentistry, marking a significant step in the institution’s efforts to enhance its educational and training environment. The initiative specifically targets the postgraduate department specializing in endodontics (dental pulp treatment).

A primary focus of the development was increasing the department’s capacity to accommodate more students. The number of dental chairs has been increased from two to eight, with each unit now fully equipped to meet professional standards.

Dr. Adib Barhoum, President of Tartus University, stated that this upgrade is a core component of the university’s strategy to elevate the standard of specialized medical education. He emphasized that the university is committed to providing an advanced training environment that meets the specific needs of resident physicians.

Dr. Barhoum noted that the increased number of dental chairs will directly facilitate broader opportunities for practical, hands-on training. This expansion is expected to alleviate overcrowding within the clinics, thereby providing residents with more clinical time and experience under the direct supervision of specialized professors. The university anticipates that this will lead to improved scientific and practical competence among graduates, ultimately enhancing the quality of dental care provided to the public.

Looking toward future improvements, the university president explained that efforts are ongoing to upgrade all equipment across university clinics and laboratories. These technical improvements are being implemented in parallel with efforts to support teaching staff and update postgraduate curricula, ensuring that programs remain aligned with current needs and available resources to guarantee high-quality specialized training.

Regarding the institution’s infrastructure, Dr. Barhoum acknowledged the challenges posed by limited space shared between the Faculties of Dentistry and Pharmacy. He confirmed that the university is currently developing both emergency and long-term strategic solutions to address the space shortage. Specifically, the university is pursuing a new campus construction project, which requires support from relevant authorities to ensure completion. This project would allow for the relocation of several faculties, effectively reducing congestion at the current sites. In the interim, the university is collaborating with the Tartus Governorate to identify a temporary location for the Faculty of Pharmacy as a short-term measure.

Proposed technical solutions to improve the university environment and create additional space also include the potential construction of a prefabricated amphitheater above the current shared lecture hall. The administration is also exploring the use of existing open spaces to install additional classrooms and prefabricated facilities.

These developments are part of the university’s broader vision for the upcoming phase, which focuses on delivering quality education and fostering an appropriate academic environment. The goal is to graduate physicians who possess high professional skills and responsibility, supported by the integration of efforts between university administration, the ministry, and the governorate to meet the requirements of the academic process.
