Tartus Water Authorities Inspect Olive Mills to Prevent Pollution

The Water Authority in the Tartus countryside has intensified its regulatory efforts during the current olive pressing season. Field teams are conducting inspections of various olive mills across the province to ensure compliance with strict regulations governing the safe disposal of “jeft” water, the liquid waste byproduct generated during the olive pressing process.
The Tartus General Company for Drinking Water and Wastewater announced on its official platform that the oversight campaign covers several villages and areas, including Oro, Ras al-Kattan, Beit Samaq, Zamrin, and Wata Hassein al-Bahr. These inspections are designed to verify that facilities are adhering to established environmental standards, thereby preventing contaminated waste from reaching drinking water sources or compromising water quality.
Management emphasized that olive mill operators are required to provide official transport receipts for the disposal of “jeft” water. These documents, issued by relevant agricultural guidance units, serve as formal proof that the waste is being handled appropriately and in accordance with established laws and regulations. These proactive measures are part of a broader commitment to safeguarding water resources and protecting them from pollution caused by the improper discharge of industrial waste, which could pose a significant environmental threat if it leaches into groundwater or surface water supplies.
The current inspections are part of a recurring operational plan implemented by local authorities in Tartus throughout the olive harvest season. The campaign aims to foster environmental awareness among agricultural industrial facility owners while enforcing necessary regulatory and punitive measures to prevent any violations. By monitoring these facilities, authorities intend to protect the region’s water infrastructure, ensure the sustainability of water resources, and guarantee that water remains safe for public consumption.
