Damascus Decries Jordanian Strikes on Daraa, Forms Security Committee

The Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates has issued a formal statement strongly condemning and rejecting recent airstrikes carried out by Jordan against sites within the Daraa Governorate. The Ministry stated that these operations constituted an unacceptable violation of Syrian airspace conducted without prior coordination, resulting in the deaths and injuries of several individuals.

In the official statement, Damascus emphasized its commitment to the historic and brotherly relations between Syria and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. The Ministry noted that these relations have reached advanced levels of mutual understanding and a shared dedication to the interests of both nations. Officials added that Syria is monitoring recent field and security developments along the shared border with deep concern and attention.

Within the same statement, Syria reiterated its strongest condemnation of the attack on the Mar Georgeos Church in Jordan several days ago. Damascus described the act as a blatant assault on religious and humanitarian values, characterizing it as an attempt to undermine the cohesive social fabric of Jordan. The Ministry expressed its sincere condolences to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to the wounded.

Regarding the recent field operations that reached deep into Syrian territory, the statement declared that such actions are rejected in their entirety and cannot be justified under any pretext. The Ministry argued that these actions violate the principles of good neighborliness and national sovereignty, and are inconsistent with the existing frameworks for cooperation and coordination between the two countries.

Furthermore, the Syrian Foreign Ministry pointed to the presence of suspicious parties attempting to disrupt relations between the two nations, aiming to sow discord and provoke crises. Reflecting the determination of both leaderships to preserve their bilateral ties, the Ministry announced that work is currently underway, in direct coordination with Jordanian authorities, to establish an urgent joint field and security committee.

This committee is tasked with putting a definitive end to field violations and incursions. It aims to secure the shared borders and ensure comprehensive security and field coordination, thereby blocking any attempts by those seeking to jeopardize the security of both nations and endanger the lives of their people.
