Homs Hosts Commemoration for Syrian Intellectual Hanna Abboud
The Homs branch of the Arab Writers Union recently hosted a memorial service in honor of the late Syrian literary critic and thinker, Hanna Abboud, marking the fortieth day since his passing. The event gathered members of the cultural community to pay tribute to a career that spanned more than six decades of intellectual output.
Throughout his prolific life, Abboud authored over one hundred books covering diverse fields, including literature, literary criticism, and philosophy. Participants at the service emphasized the importance of preserving the legacy of such figures, noting that his contributions remain a cornerstone of modern Syrian thought. Speakers at the event, including academics and peers, reflected on his unique methodology in documenting literary history and his commitment to critical inquiry.
Dr. Ahmed Jassim Al-Hussein, President of the Arab Writers Union, noted that the tribute served as a celebration of the Syrian cultural landscape that Abboud participated in for sixty years. He highlighted that Abboud’s work consistently addressed themes of justice, freedom, and equality, grounded in a deeply humanist perspective. Reflecting on the personal and professional character of the deceased, the head of the Homs branch of the Arab Writers Union, Abeer Nahas, stated that the event was a testament to the city’s loyalty to its scholars. Nahas highlighted Abboud’s integrity and his intellectual positioning during the recent years of crisis in Syria, noting his choice to remain independent. Writer and critic Atiya Masouh, who shared a long-standing personal and professional relationship with Abboud, focused his remarks on the latter’s innovative approach to literary documentation. He cited major works such as “History of the Novel” and “Rhetoric: From Invocation to Globalization” as prime examples of Abboud’s analytical rigor. Nizar Abboud, the son of the late thinker, expressed his gratitude for the turnout, noting that the presence of writers, friends, and readers at the commemoration reflected the significant impact his father left on the public and the intellectual community.
