Religious Seminar Held at Damascus Umayyad Mosque

The Syrian Ministry of Awqaf held a religious seminar on Friday at the historic Umayyad Mosque in Damascus as part of the ongoing “Because He is God” campaign, which was recently launched by the Ministry. The event was attended by the Minister of Awqaf, Mohammad Abdul-Sattar al-Sayyed, along with several members of the Supreme Fatwa Council and prominent religious scholars.

The seminar focused on deepening the concepts of love and reverence for God, emphasizing the importance of holding fast to the Holy Quran and applying these spiritual values to the daily behavior of citizens. Participants, including Dr. Khairallah Talib, Dr. Mohammad Wahbi Suleiman, Dr. Bilal Nour al-Din, and Sheikh Ismail al-Zubaibi, underscored that embodying love for the Creator is practically demonstrated through benevolence toward others, kindness in social interactions, and the rejection of hatred. The speakers noted that these practices are essential for societal stability, safety, and the strengthening of human bonds.

Diaa al-Din al-Barsha, the Assistant Minister of Awqaf for Religious Affairs, explained that this seminar is part of a series of large-scale activities being conducted across various Syrian governorates. These initiatives target Islamic schools, mosques, and Quranic study circles. According to al-Barsha, the strategic objective of the campaign is to instill moral and religious values and to provide practical methods for translating these principles into tangible daily life.

During the proceedings, Dr. Mohammad Wahbi Suleiman highlighted the significance of reflecting on the signs of God and His creation. He noted that contemplating these meanings fosters a sense of inner peace and contentment, which positively influences an individual’s engagement with their social environment. Dr. Bilal Nour al-Din added that translating these concepts into practical conduct—such as upholding rights and fostering social solidarity—strengthens the culture of tolerance and the cohesion of the social fabric.

The Minister of Awqaf opened the day’s events with the Friday sermon, where he emphasized the importance of reflecting on the blessings and commandments of God to consolidate faith-based concepts. The “Because He is God” campaign, which officially commenced on the 15th of this month, reflects the Ministry’s efforts to bolster cultural and religious identity. The campaign centers on the concepts of mindfulness of God in one’s actions and the building of a cohesive society grounded in mutual respect and high ethical values.
