China Launches New Satellite via Sea-Based Rocket

China successfully executed a new space mission on Wednesday, placing a satellite into orbit using a Ceres-1 Y8 carrier rocket. The launch took place at 11:39 a.m. Beijing time from Chinese territorial waters near the city of Rizhao, located in the eastern province of Shandong.

The mission was overseen by the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center. This launch is part of China’s ongoing efforts to enhance its national space capabilities and expand its operational footprint in Earth’s orbit.

This mission follows a period of intensive space activity by China. On the 10th of this month, China conducted another launch involving a Long March-12 carrier rocket from a commercial spaceport in Hainan province, in the southern part of the country. That particular mission was aimed at deploying a constellation of satellites designed for internet services, signaling a growing strategic focus on developing commercial, global satellite-based communications and internet infrastructure.

These activities are integral to China’s broader, ambitious plans to utilize sea-based launch technologies. The use of maritime launch platforms provides greater flexibility in selecting launch sites and allows for an increase in the frequency and efficiency of space missions. Through these initiatives, Beijing continues to strengthen its presence in the global technology and communications sectors.
