Syrian Writers Union Joins General Union Meeting in Benghazi

The Syrian Writers Union is participating in the ongoing meetings of the General Union of Arab Writers, hosted in the Libyan city of Benghazi. The two-day event brings together heads of Arab writers’ unions, representatives from literary and intellectual organizations, and a range of experts and consultants specializing in cultural affairs.

The summit aims to explore ways to strengthen joint Arab cultural efforts and enhance cooperation mechanisms between literary institutions across the Arab world. Key objectives include expanding cultural partnerships and fostering closer ties among intellectuals from various countries.

Dr. Ahmed Jassim Al-Hussein, President of the Syrian Writers Union, emphasized that the Syrian delegation’s presence reflects the union’s commitment to regular participation in the General Union’s proceedings. He noted that the meeting’s agenda covers several core issues, most notably the advancement of collaborative cultural work and the organization of large-scale, cross-border activities. Proposals for a dedicated Arab cultural summit—designed to serve as a platform for developing the regional literary landscape—were also discussed.

Discussions further focused on establishing a coordination committee among Arab unions to ensure the sustainable follow-up and implementation of cultural initiatives. The participants also explored the possibility of finalizing bilateral and multilateral agreements to create new opportunities for joint programs that support Arab literature, thought, and culture.

In an effort to bolster cultural presence and exchange expertise, attendees addressed the importance of sharing literary and intellectual publications among member states. The meeting also underscored the value of organizing specialized joint conferences intended to refine literary experience and deepen connections between institutions in Algeria, Mauritania, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Palestine, Yemen, Jordan, Iraq, and Syria.

This participation concludes on Thursday in Benghazi. These meetings, which are held two to three times annually, serve as a primary pillar for overseeing joint Arab cultural work and refining the organizational framework of the General Union of Arab Writers. Established in the 1960s, the General Union acts as a body affiliated with the League of Arab States, providing a comprehensive framework to serve Arab culture and unify literary initiatives throughout the region.
