Syrian Initiatives Promote Media Responsibility and Combat Misinformation

The Syrian media landscape is witnessing a surge of calls to strengthen professional responsibility among journalists and content creators. These efforts come in response to the significant challenges posed by the proliferation of misinformation, which experts warn is directly impacting social peace.

Specialists in fact-checking emphasize that countering disinformation requires a coordinated approach involving individuals, media institutions, and digital platforms. The objective is to secure a reliable and accurate information environment.

Ahmad Primo, director of a fact-checking platform, highlighted the danger of unverified news, noting that its impact extends far beyond mere inaccuracy. He explained that misinformation can damage the social fabric and deepen divisions. According to Primo, the intentional use of false information to target specific groups can fuel social tensions and incite violence. He stressed that responsibility must begin with the individual, who has a duty to verify information before sharing, and extend to media organizations tasked with the ethical obligation of reporting the truth.

Majd Maghribia, a content creation trainer, also called for a reassessment of the motivations behind publishing information. He warned against the common practice where some creators prioritize online trends over accuracy and professional standards. Maghribia emphasized that freedom of expression is inherently linked to ethical and legal responsibilities. He urged creators to evaluate the potential ripple effects of their posts before sharing them, particularly regarding sensitive political or religious topics. He noted that hasty publication can unjustly harm individuals or trigger societal strife, consequences that often transcend formal legal penalties.

These initiatives are part of the ‘Words Build’ campaign, launched by the Syrian Media Academy in cooperation with the Syrian Ministry of Information and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The campaign aims to raise awareness about the dangers of incitement and hate speech, while providing practical tools for the public and journalists to distinguish between verified information and misleading content.

Organizers are focusing on fostering a culture of cross-referencing sources as a foundational pillar for building societal awareness. This effort is seen as a vital protection for social peace, with experts emphasizing that responsible media practice serves as the primary line of defense against efforts to manipulate public opinion. Those behind the campaign hope these collective efforts will contribute to a more professional and grounded national media discourse, thereby strengthening public trust in news media and safeguarding the community against the destabilizing effects of rumors.
