Damascus Workers Union Honors 239 Top-Performing Students

The Damascus and Rif Dimashq Workers Union hosted a special awards ceremony at its headquarters in Damascus to honor 239 students, the children of workers, who achieved academic excellence in their basic and secondary school examinations. The event was part of a broader effort by Syrian labor unions to recognize high-achieving students and support the educational journey of the working class.

Sanaa Waked, the Union’s head of Media and Culture, addressed the attendees and emphasized that supporting students is a top priority for the General Federation of Trade Unions. She reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to providing necessary resources to help students continue their academic pursuits. Waked explained that the union is actively organizing free educational courses designed to alleviate the financial burden on working-class families, ensuring a supportive environment that allows students to reach their full potential and achieve advanced academic results.

Nader Sawsak, head of the Damascus and Rif Dimashq Workers Union, noted that the students’ success is a direct result of their personal will and perseverance. He highlighted their future role in contributing to Syrian society, noting that these young individuals will become the scientific professionals capable of contributing effectively to national development and reconstruction efforts. Sawsak also expressed his gratitude to the teachers and parents, acknowledging their fundamental role in supporting the students throughout the academic year.

Mayada Al-Ahmad, the Union’s Secretary of Culture, added that the success of the students reflects the dedication of their families in providing the appropriate environment for learning. She confirmed that the union would continue to support high-achieving students and encourage them to pursue their long-term academic ambitions.

During the event, students and their families expressed their appreciation for the initiative. The mother of student Ali Nidal Hamoud attributed the academic success to diligent family supervision, effective communication with teaching staff, and careful planning to ensure study materials were covered efficiently. Student Amira Tarbin expressed her gratitude for the recognition, while student Youssef Safatli stated that the ceremony served as a significant morale booster as he looks forward to his future studies in information engineering.

This initiative is part of a series of union-led activities taking place across various Syrian governorates. Previously, the Hama Workers Union organized a similar event honoring over 100 students, further highlighting the ongoing role of labor organizations in supporting national human capital.
