Aleppo Honors Students Excelling in Reading and Mental Math

The city of Aleppo recently hosted a cultural and educational event titled “Our Children Create,” held at the National Library. During the ceremony, the Aleppo Directorate of Culture, represented by the Child Culture Department and in collaboration with the “Fuadi” Foundation, recognized a group of distinguished children for their achievements in reading and mental math.
The event aligns with the ongoing efforts of the Directorate of Culture to highlight young talent in the city and provide a supportive environment for developing their skills. Ramez Qouja, Head of the Child Culture Department in Aleppo, emphasized that the event focused on honoring eight students who achieved excellence at the national level in the Arab Reading Challenge. Additionally, winners of the mental math championship were recognized. This competition saw broad participation from 40 children across various governorates, with five students securing top positions through their demonstrated abilities.
Shirehat Hussein, Director of Protection Programs at the Fuadi Foundation, explained that the partnership with the Directorate of Culture is designed to secure safe and supportive spaces for children. Hussein noted that the ultimate goal of these activities is to discover and nurture talent while fostering self-confidence. He added that such initiatives contribute to preparing an aware generation that understands its rights and responsibilities, while remaining capable of effectively building their future and that of their community.
The event also featured a notable appearance by Lulia Bilal Obeid, Syria’s representative to the Arab Parliament for the Child. She expressed her pride in the experience, highlighting the importance of sharing the expertise gained at the Arab Parliament with her peers in Aleppo. Her focus, she explained, is on issues such as the cultural identity of Arab children and cybersecurity. She also expressed her appreciation for the Directorate’s efforts in supporting young innovators.
The ceremony included various creative segments presented by the children, ranging from poetry recitations to skill-based performances. These were complemented by mental math challenges and competitions that showcased the high academic level of the participants. This initiative is part of a series of activities adopted by the Aleppo Directorate of Culture to support educational and cultural programs. These efforts aim to encourage children to maintain their reading and learning habits while invigorating the cultural scene in the governorate to foster the capabilities of the younger generation.
