Syria Named Guest of Honor at Amman International Book Fair
Syria is participating as the guest of honor at the 25th edition of the Amman International Book Fair, a move that reflects the deep cultural and emotional bonds between the two nations. This participation includes 26 Syrian publishing houses, which are presenting a wide variety of intellectual and literary works, alongside a program featuring cultural seminars, poetry evenings, and live performances showcasing Syria’s tangible and intangible heritage.
Syrian Minister of Culture, Mohammad Yassin Saleh, emphasized that the country’s presence at the fair serves as a cultural event aimed at strengthening the ties between Syrian creators and their audience across the Arab world. He noted the ministry’s commitment to providing young Syrian talent with the opportunity to play an active role in this significant cultural forum.
Participating Syrian publishers highlighted the importance of this year’s edition. Marwan Al-Adwan, from Mamdouh Adwan Publishing and Distribution, pointed to the significant overlap in the interests of Syrian and Jordanian readers, explaining that Syria’s selection as guest of honor lends a special character to the Syrian presence this year. Fadia Abdel Khaleq, representing Dar Raslan and Dar Alaa Al-Din for Publishing, added that the fair acts as a vital gateway, allowing Syrian publishers to reach new audiences and exchange ideas with authors and readers from diverse cultural backgrounds, ultimately contributing to the development of the cultural sector.
The fair, which commenced last Thursday, is scheduled to run until October 3rd. The Syrian Ministry of Culture’s pavilion provides a comprehensive look at the nation’s cultural identity. Beyond historical and archaeological displays, the pavilion includes arts, traditional crafts, and customs, illustrating the persistence of Syrian culture as a living, evolving entity capable of engaging with the broader Arab cultural landscape.
This participation is part of ongoing efforts to bolster the cultural presence of Syrian literature in the Arab region and to expand communication channels with publishers and readers. It serves as a testament to the historical and civilizational reach of Syrian culture and its enduring influence.
