Three Workers Killed in Explosion at Baniyas Thermal Power Station

An industrial accident occurred on Tuesday at the Baniyas thermal power station in Tartus province, resulting in the deaths of three workers from the Syrian Electricity Company. The incident took place during routine maintenance operations at the facility.

According to Alaa Souda, head of the Public Relations and Media Department at the Syrian Electricity Company, the explosion was triggered during work on a hydrogen storage tank. The incident occurred specifically while maintenance crews were in the process of replacing the tank’s float valve.

Following the explosion, emergency response teams, including the Civil Defense, were immediately dispatched to the site to manage the situation and address the aftermath. Local officials, including the director of the Baniyas area, Omar Mansour, visited the facility to survey the scene and assess the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident. Relevant authorities have initiated an investigation to determine the specific details and technical causes of the explosion as they continue to oversee the site.

The Syrian Ministry of Electricity issued a formal statement expressing deep condolences to the families and colleagues of the deceased workers, acknowledging that they were performing their professional duties at the time of the accident. Medical authorities from the Tartus Health Directorate confirmed that the bodies of the three workers were transported to the Baniyas Hospital shortly after the explosion occurred.

Despite the severity of the accident, officials confirmed that the structural and operational integrity of the power plant remains intact. The Baniyas thermal station is continuing its regular operations, and electricity generation has not been interrupted as a result of the explosion. The facility remains a critical component of the national power grid in the coastal region.
