Tartus Irrigation Infrastructure Upgraded to Support Syrian Agriculture

Water resource authorities in the Syrian coastal governorate of Tartus have completed the installation of a new high-capacity submersible pump at a key irrigation station in the Yahmour plain. The upgrade is part of a broader, ongoing effort to maintain agricultural output and stabilize water supply systems across the region.

The project involved replacing equipment at the fifth well within the station’s facility. The newly installed unit, a 40-horsepower pump with a five-inch diameter, is now fully operational. This technical intervention is expected to secure consistent water access for approximately 180 hectares of agricultural land, specifically benefiting the farming communities located in the Yahmour and Miar districts.

Water security remains a top priority for agricultural planning in the coastal region, where local crops depend heavily on reliable irrigation networks. The Yahmour plain is recognized as a vital agricultural area, and the sustained functionality of these pumping stations is critical to preventing crop failure and supporting the livelihoods of local farmers. By ensuring that water infrastructure remains resilient, officials aim to mitigate the risks associated with equipment failure in aging systems.

Mohammed Mehrez, the director of Water Resources in Tartus, stated that this upgrade is a significant step toward bolstering the overall readiness of the irrigation system. He noted that the restoration of this well directly supports the continuity of farming operations in the area, providing the necessary volume of water to meet current seasonal demands.

Beyond this specific site, provincial authorities are engaged in a rolling program of maintenance and rehabilitation for various water stations and wells throughout the governorate. These efforts are designed to modernize aging infrastructure, improve the efficiency of water distribution, and ensure that limited water resources are managed effectively.

As Syria continues to navigate a complex economic environment, the preservation of its agricultural sector remains a cornerstone of domestic stability. Reliable access to irrigation infrastructure is essential for maintaining production levels for local markets. The completion of the Yahmour project serves as a practical example of the localized infrastructure management required to sustain rural economic activity.

Moving forward, the regional water department plans to continue monitoring the condition of the irrigation network.
