Syria Participates as Guest of Honor at Istanbul Book Fair
The Syrian Arab Republic is participating as the guest of honor in the 11th edition of the Istanbul International Arabic Book Fair, which officially opened its doors this Saturday under the theme “The Story Continues.” The event, which has become a significant fixture in the regional cultural calendar, runs from August 15 through August 23 and brings together publishers and intellectuals from across the Arab world and beyond.
A Syrian delegation, led by Deputy Minister of Culture Saad Naasan, attended the opening ceremony. The delegation also included the Syrian Consul in Istanbul, Khalid Hindawi, alongside various figures from the cultural and media sectors. The presence of high-level representatives underscores the importance the Syrian Ministry of Culture places on maintaining its role in the broader regional literary and intellectual landscape.
At the heart of the Syrian exhibition is a dedicated pavilion hosted by the Ministry of Culture. The ministry has curated a diverse collection of intellectual, literary, and heritage-based publications, showcasing a wide array of works that highlight the depth of Syrian historical and contemporary output. Beyond the display of books, the Syrian pavilion is hosting a comprehensive cultural program designed to introduce visitors to the nuances of the Syrian cultural scene. This program features a series of meetings with prominent Syrian writers and intellectuals, as well as specialized activities aimed at promoting the country’s literary achievements and intellectual contributions to an international audience.
The broader Istanbul International Arabic Book Fair is hosting approximately 300 publishing houses representing 30 different countries. Throughout the nine-day event, organizers have scheduled a robust slate of daily programming, including seminars, academic lectures, and intellectual forums. The event also serves as a hub for cultural exchange, with scheduled book signing sessions, poetry evenings, and various artistic performances taking place alongside the commercial exhibitions. By participating as the guest of honor, the Syrian delegation aims to foster stronger connections within the Arab literary community and engage with the international publishing industry, providing a platform for Syrian voices and perspectives in a multinational setting.
