Syria and Romania Hold Talks to Strengthen Parliamentary Cooperation
As part of ongoing efforts to bolster diplomatic engagement with European nations and advance foreign relations, the Charge d’Affaires of the Syrian Embassy in Romania, Anas Badawi, held an official meeting with the Chairman of the Foreign Policy Committee of the Romanian Senate, Titus Corlățean, in Bucharest.
The discussions focused on identifying mechanisms to reactivate and develop Syrian-Romanian relations, with a specific emphasis on strengthening political and parliamentary communication channels between the two countries.
According to the Syrian Embassy in Bucharest, which reported the meeting via the ‘X’ platform, the dialogue highlighted the importance of activating parliamentary friendship committees. These committees are viewed as essential tools for exchanging legislative and political experience and expertise. Furthermore, the two sides explored opportunities to broaden the scope of their joint cooperation across multiple sectors, with a particular focus on fostering direct collaboration between the Syrian People’s Assembly and the Romanian Parliament.
For its part, the Romanian side expressed interest and openness regarding developments in Syria, indicating a willingness to explore avenues for advancing bilateral relations within the available frameworks. At the conclusion of the meeting, both parties agreed to initiate the development of a joint action plan aimed at strengthening cooperation on issues of mutual interest and enhancing diplomatic and parliamentary ties to serve the bilateral interests of both nations.
These discussions take place within the context of Syria’s diplomatic push to revitalize its political and parliamentary presence on the international stage, particularly with European governmental and parliamentary institutions. Romania is seen as a key channel through which Syria seeks to enhance bilateral dialogue, both politically and economically. This engagement reflects a shared desire to maintain and develop communication channels amidst current challenges and ongoing developments.
