Positive European Update on Syrian Airspace Safety

The Syrian General Authority for Civil Aviation has reported positive indicators regarding the assessment of Syrian airspace by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).
Omar Al-Hosary, head of the authority, confirmed that the latest update issued by the agency reflects tangible progress in risk assessment. This development specifically pertains to a reduction in the risk level for high-altitude overflights, as well as the potential utilization of specific segments of Syrian airspace in accordance with approved technical regulations.
Al-Hosary noted that this progress is part of the authority’s ongoing efforts to enhance air connectivity with the European continent. These updates coincided with a series of meetings held between the authority and the European Union mission, alongside representatives of European missions in Syria, to discuss practical steps necessary to bolster cooperation within the civil aviation sector.
As part of the initiative to strengthen international confidence in Syrian airspace and expand air transit movement, Al-Hosary indicated that two Asian airlines are preparing to commence operations through Syrian airspace within the coming few days. He characterized this development as an additional indicator of restored international confidence and the effectiveness of the technical measures implemented by the authority.
Regarding the development of infrastructure and air navigation, the authority successfully approved the L602 air route last month as part of a comprehensive project to modernize the Syrian airway network. This measure follows months of rigorous technical studies and aircraft movement simulations, conducted in close coordination with neighboring countries and relevant international organizations to ensure the efficiency and safety of the airspace.
These advancements occur as the General Authority for Civil Aviation continues to address remaining technical restrictions through intensive international coordination. The authority aims to restore the vital role of Syrian airspace as an essential and effective component of the international air navigation network, thereby serving national interests and strengthening Syria’s regional and international connectivity.
