New Study Explores Rhetoric in the Works of Al-Ansari
As part of ongoing Syrian research efforts aimed at highlighting and methodically analyzing Islamic heritage, scholar and poet Dr. Mohammed Zakaria Al-Hamad has released a new book titled “Rhetoric According to Sheikh Zakaria Al-Ansari: Between Methodological Foundation and Knowledge Impact.”
The 320-page work, published by Kitab Dunyasi in Istanbul, serves as a significant contribution to the Arab academic field focused on editing heritage and deconstructing the scholarly methodologies of later eras. Through this book, Dr. Al-Hamad seeks to address a fundamental intellectual question: whether traditional commentaries and compilations were merely repetitive iterations of terminology, or if they contained sophisticated cognitive methodologies and inferential tools that have not yet received sufficient analytical study.
The research focuses on the corpus of Sheikh Zakaria Al-Ansari, a figure primarily known in the academic memory for his work in jurisprudence and its principles. Dr. Al-Hamad investigates how Al-Ansari utilized the sciences of rhetoric—namely eloquence, semantics, and stylistic innovation—to interpret religious texts and refine their connotations. The study examines key works by Al-Ansari, including “Aqsa al-Amani fi ‘Ilm al-Bayan wa al-Badi’ wa al-Ma’ani” and his commentary “Fath Manzil al-Mathani,” alongside his contributions to Hadith studies, exegesis, and grammar.
In a statement, Dr. Al-Hamad emphasized that his objective is to restore the status of the integrative vision within Arab heritage. He asserted that rhetoric is not merely a linguistic luxury but an essential foundational tool for comprehending the deeper layers of the Arabic text. He noted that Al-Ansari’s writings represent a “rich rhetorical mine” that combines precise linguistic evidence with masterful graphic guidance, thereby opening new avenues for interpreting the commentaries of scholars from later periods.
This publication is a continuation of the scientific project undertaken by Dr. Al-Hamad, a prominent Syrian researcher dedicated to the critique and editing of classical texts. Dr. Al-Hamad, who possesses an extensive academic and poetic background, has previously produced notable works such as “Ma’aber al-Usul: A Simplified Journey in the Shadows of Al-Waraqat” and the editing of “Letters on Logic by Al-Hassan Al-Juraydi.”
Sheikh Zakaria bin Mohammed Al-Ansari (823 AH – 926 AH) remains one of the most distinguished scholars of his time, leaving a lasting impact across various Sharia and linguistic disciplines. Dr. Al-Hamad’s book sheds new light on this scholarly figure, specifically from the perspective of rhetoric, offering a model for how linguistic tools can be utilized to understand and deconstruct religious texts and their jurisprudence.
