Maarat al-Nuuman Officials Hold Dialogue Session on Development Needs
Members of the Syrian Parliament representing the Maarat al-Nuuman area held a consultative session on Thursday at the local postal building to engage with community leaders, members of the electoral body, and local stakeholders. The dialogue was aimed at identifying the urgent needs of the region as it undergoes a process of recovery and reintegration for returning families.
During the meeting, participants discussed the future legislative agenda of the Parliament and the most pressing service and development challenges facing the area. The session highlighted the significant destruction the region endured, which resulted in widespread displacement, the loss of essential infrastructure, and a decline in public services. With thousands of displaced families now returning to the area, there is an immediate and growing pressure on the local government to rehabilitate public utilities.
Parliament member Hassan Al-Dughaim emphasized that these direct, face-to-face engagements with constituents are fundamental to the work of the upcoming legislative session. He stressed that by witnessing the conditions in Maarat al-Nuuman firsthand, representatives can better advocate for the region’s specific needs under the parliamentary dome. He noted that given the scale of the devastation the town has suffered, it requires significant attention and priority in national development plans.
Fellow parliamentarian Faraj Al-Aqdah outlined a focus on key sectors, specifically prioritizing the reconstruction of public infrastructure. He indicated that the restoration of basic services—including water supply, electricity networks, and the rehabilitation of road infrastructure—is vital to supporting the return of residents and assisting those who lost their livelihoods. He described the current state of the district as requiring extensive support to restore normalcy.
Local representatives and activists highlighted the human toll of the conflict, urging the Parliament to prioritize the needs of war-injured individuals and the families of those killed in the conflict. Activist Mohammed Qasheet underscored the importance of road safety, noting that current traffic congestion and damaged infrastructure pose ongoing risks. He also called for urgent investment in the local agricultural sector, which remains a primary source of income for many residents, as well as the immediate rehabilitation of schools and health centers.
Zahir Shabeeb, representing community elders in the town of Kafr Ruma, echoed these sentiments, stressing the need for a comprehensive strategy to accelerate regional investment and economic development.
This dialogue session is part of a broader series of meetings being conducted across various districts between regional representatives and their constituents. The initiative seeks to bridge the gap between local communities and the legislative body to ensure that recovery efforts are directed toward the most critical priorities in the region’s ongoing restoration.
