Damascus Hosts First Syrian-German Medical Engineering Forum

The Faculty of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering at Damascus University recently hosted the launch of the first Syrian-German Medical Engineering Forum. The event aims to strengthen knowledge sharing and technical cooperation between Syrian professionals and specialists from Germany.

Discussions during the opening day focused on updating international standards for the licensing of medical devices. Participants explored ways to align local practices with global requirements, ensuring the safety and quality of equipment used within the healthcare sector.

Ahmed Al-Hamwi, a board member of the Syrian Association in Germany, delivered a technical presentation examining the current state and future of medical devices in light of recent regulatory updates introduced by the European Union. These regulations, known as the Medical Device Regulation (MDR), were a central topic of the session. Al-Hamwi emphasized the necessity for medical engineers in Syria to keep pace with these modern international legislations, noting that doing so will enhance the skills of local personnel and improve the mechanisms for testing and monitoring medical equipment according to established global standards.

Separately, speakers Ahmed Youssef and Yahya Issa addressed the vital role of medical engineering in advancing ophthalmology. They highlighted technical innovations in diagnostic devices and surgical interventions. The presentation also addressed the economic and technical challenges surrounding manufacturing processes and the rising costs of continuous equipment development amid rapidly changing global medical technologies.

Organized by the Syrian Society for Medical Engineering in cooperation with the Syrian Association in Germany, the forum serves as a platform to exchange expertise and develop the skills of Syrian engineers and technicians. The event program includes intensive practical training covering the latest technologies in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), endoscopic surgery equipment, and ophthalmic surgery tools. It also features interactive sessions designed to open new avenues for knowledge exchange and cooperation in technical training and qualification between the two sides.

This scientific event represents a significant step in the development of medical infrastructure in Syria. By providing local professionals the opportunity to examine the latest advancements in European medical engineering, the initiative aims to improve the efficiency of health services provided to citizens through the deployment of safer and more effective medical devices. Furthermore, the forum seeks to foster long-term cooperation between Syrian educational and technical institutions and their German counterparts.
