Aleppo Blood Bank Enhances Operations to Ensure Strategic Stock

The Blood Bank center in Aleppo has recently undergone extensive administrative and organizational improvements aimed at managing high patient volume and ensuring the smooth flow of medical services to hospitals and clinics across the governorate. These measures are part of the management’s commitment to maintaining a stable strategic reserve of blood and securing all blood types, particularly rare ones.
Dr. Mohammad Jameel Tahan, director of the Blood Bank, explained that the center had previously faced challenges due to congestion caused by a shortage of specialized technical staff for blood collection, compounded by a large influx of donors arriving simultaneously. This surge was primarily driven by demand for blood donation certificates required for official procedures, syndicate paperwork, university graduation requirements, and employment applications.
To address these bottlenecks, the center has adopted a pre-coordination strategy with relevant authorities, such as the Directorate of Education. This system involves scheduling donors in manageable daily batches of 100 to 200 people. The center plans to expand this mechanism to other institutions to effectively eliminate overcrowding and reduce waiting times for citizens.
As part of a broader plan to develop infrastructure and human resources, Dr. Tahan confirmed that the General Establishment for Blood Banks has contracted more than 10 new blood collection technicians, who are expected to begin their duties sequentially. Additionally, a project is underway to rehabilitate and expand the current blood collection hall to accommodate the growing number of donors, which now reaches between 250 and 300 individuals daily. These operational improvements are supported by ongoing logistical efforts to ensure a steady supply of blood bags and laboratory testing materials, guaranteeing uninterrupted service for hospitals that rely entirely on the center for surgical procedures and emergency cases.
Furthermore, the center revealed a strategy to alleviate pressure on the main facility in the city by rehabilitating and restoring five branch blood banks located in the governorate’s rural areas. There is also a future plan to open an additional collection point within Aleppo to bring services closer to residents in remote neighborhoods.
These measures have been met with positive feedback from donors. During a recent field visit, many donors highlighted the precision of the medical and organizational procedures. They noted that the efficiency of clinical examinations and the speed of the collection process—which takes only a few minutes—reflect the high level of professionalism among the staff.
It is noteworthy that the Aleppo Blood Bank building underwent comprehensive rehabilitation and maintenance with the support of the “Le-Uyounik Ya Halab” (For Your Eyes, O Aleppo) campaign. The facility reopened in October of last year, resuming its vital role as a safety valve for the local healthcare sector.
