Al-Hasakah: New Water Pipeline to Boost Supply in Al-Zuhour District
Technical teams from the General Company for Drinking Water and Sanitation in Al-Hasakah, in cooperation with the Action Against Hunger organization, have begun work on extending an additional water pipeline to serve the Al-Zuhour district, located in the southern part of the city. The project is a strategic step aimed at addressing the weak water pressure that has hindered supply for residents in the area.
Farhan Al-Oweis, Director of the company, explained that the initiative involves repurposing a section of the Euphrates water transport line that had previously been out of service. Technical connections are being established to link this line to both the Al-Zuhour district and the water pumping station in the Al-Aziziyah neighborhood. Al-Oweis noted that these upgrades will directly enhance water flow, ensuring consistent delivery to neighborhoods at the end of the network and in higher-altitude areas that have historically faced significant supply difficulties.
In a related context, the director emphasized that the company’s efforts are ongoing to improve the water situation across Al-Hasakah city and its surrounding areas. This includes intensified maintenance operations on secondary transport lines, repairing fractures, and addressing leaks that affected the network during years of inactivity. Furthermore, the company is implementing support connections for distribution networks in various neighborhoods to ensure the stability of water supplies.
Al-Oweis further stated that achieving a permanent, long-term solution to the issues of low pressure and frequent water outages requires the Alouk water station to operate at its full production capacity. Currently, the station houses 34 wells and 8 horizontal pumping stations; however, only about half of these facilities are operational due to recurring technical malfunctions. He added that maintenance work is proceeding in parallel with these new projects to ensure the necessary repairs are carried out.
Notably, since last July—coinciding with the reactivation of the Alouk station—the General Company for Drinking Water and Sanitation has completed maintenance work at 380 sites across the Al-Hasakah water network to ensure the reliable arrival of drinking water to the population.
On July 22, the Ministry of Energy announced that the Alouk water station had returned to service with a production capacity exceeding 50 percent, following years of closure. The ministry reaffirmed that the station serves as the primary source of water for Al-Hasakah city, its suburbs, and the western countryside, with ongoing efforts to gradually restore the facility to its full production capacity.
