Damascus: Ministry Meets to Address Climate Impact on Agriculture

The Ministry of Agriculture in Damascus has convened a periodic meeting of the Council for Mitigating the Impacts of Natural Disasters on Agricultural Production. The session is part of an ongoing government effort to address the mounting challenges facing the agricultural sector, which has been increasingly affected by climate change and unpredictable weather patterns.

During the meeting, officials conducted a comprehensive review of the current state of agricultural production across various Syrian provinces. The assessment focused on the damage sustained by strategic crops and cultivated land due to natural disasters that have occurred over the recent period.

Discussions among the participants centered on developing mechanisms to enhance the resilience of farmers. The council examined preventive plans aimed at reducing losses caused by environmental phenomena—such as drought, frost, and storms—which pose direct threats to food security and the national economy.

Emphasizing the importance of inter-agency cooperation, the Ministry stated that it is essential to coordinate efforts to provide necessary support to those affected and to ensure the continued productivity of Syrian farmland. This meeting serves as a component of a series of institutional measures implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture to evaluate field damages. The objective is to establish a strategic vision for improved disaster management techniques, which would contribute to protecting crops and mitigating the financial losses suffered by farmers.

Furthermore, the council explored ways to improve the infrastructure and technologies used in agricultural crisis management. The focus is on ensuring that technical and logistical assistance reaches the regions most vulnerable to climatic risks. These efforts are part of the broader government work plan dedicated to supporting the agricultural sector, which remains a cornerstone of the country’s local economy.
