Damascus Province Upgrades Vital Southern Highway Entrance

The Damascus Governorate is continuing its efforts to implement a series of service and rehabilitation works at the city’s southern entrance. This route serves as a vital traffic artery connecting the capital with its surrounding areas, most notably the road leading to the Daraa highway.
Jabra Abdoush, Assistant Director of the Supervision Directorate at the Governorate, stated that these operations are part of a structured plan designed to improve the city’s road infrastructure. The project aims to enhance traffic efficiency, reduce congestion, and provide a safer environment for both drivers and passengers.
The rehabilitation project includes laying new asphalt over approximately 10 kilometers of roadway. This work is distributed equally between the inbound and outbound lanes, each measuring up to 14 meters in width, covering a total surface area of approximately 140,000 square meters. Abdoush noted that work on the outbound lane from Damascus toward Daraa is well underway, having reached its midpoint. The current phase is expected to be completed within the next few days, at which point crews will immediately begin paving the inbound lane leading into the capital.
The project involves precise technical procedures, beginning with the removal of worn-out asphalt layers. The road surface is then cleaned and leveled to ensure the quality and durability of the new asphalt layer. However, the development work is not limited to paving; it encompasses a broader package of improvements for the southern entrance. This includes the maintenance of sidewalks, curbs, and the central median, as well as the rehabilitation of lighting poles and electrical components to ensure adequate nighttime visibility.
Furthermore, the plan includes maintenance for existing pedestrian bridges and tunnels in the area. The project also addresses environmental and aesthetic aspects, with new topsoil being spread across surrounding green spaces and new trees being planted to improve the visual landscape of the capital’s entrance.
These efforts are part of the Damascus Governorate’s ongoing commitment to completing infrastructure maintenance projects. The initiative reflects a broader focus on providing essential services to citizens and ensuring the continued maintenance of the primary road network, which supports daily transportation and movement within and outside the city.
