National Project Launched to Revitalize Syrian Seed System

The Syrian Ministry of Agriculture is continuing to implement its strategic plans aimed at strengthening the local seed production system through the Seed System Restoration (SSR) project. This national initiative is primarily designed to improve the quality of certified seeds, restore their varietal purity, and guarantee that agricultural regions are supplied with reliable seeds. These efforts align with national goals to increase agricultural output and achieve food security.
Mohammad Yasser Abrash, Director of Production at the General Organization for Seed Multiplication, stated that the project serves as a cornerstone for developing the capabilities of multiplication farmers. These specialized producers are responsible for cultivating seeds and agricultural seedlings in accordance with strict technical standards and rigorous conditions to ensure the quality and availability of planting materials for both institutions and farmers.
Abrash explained that the success of the project relies on the coordinated efforts of implementing partners. He noted that the initiative provides essential technical support through the establishment of demonstration fields, specialized seminars, and training courses. These activities are intended to improve the professional efficiency of farmers and ensure the widespread adoption of best agricultural practices.
To ensure the effectiveness of the project, the General Organization for Seed Multiplication has established specific performance indicators. These include increasing the total volume of seeds produced, expanding the network of trained farmers, and fostering technical expertise. Furthermore, the project tracks the expansion of land cultivated with wheat and monitors the volume of grain delivered to the General Organization for Grain. To support these outcomes, the project has worked to overcome challenges related to the procurement of production inputs, providing participating farmers with high-quality urea and phosphate fertilizers free of charge.
The General Organization for Seed Multiplication is working to provide appropriate seeds at affordable prices in a timely manner to align with agricultural seasons, thereby fostering stability in the agricultural sector. These efforts are part of the Ministry of Agriculture’s five-year plan for the 2026–2030 period. The plan prioritizes the expansion of improved crop varieties known for high yields and resistance to drought and disease. It also focuses on developing an integrated production system capable of adapting to climate change and water scarcity. Through the development and introduction of advanced varieties of major crops, the ministry aims to meet national needs and bolster food security while ensuring the sustainability and growth of domestic agricultural production.
