Fiber Optic Project ‘Barq Net’ Launched in Hama

The Syrian Telecom Company in Hama Governorate has officially commenced the implementation of the “Barq Net” project. This initiative involves the extension of a fiber optic network within the Al-Nasr neighborhood in the city center, marking a significant step in the modernization of local telecommunications infrastructure and the improvement of internet service quality for subscribers.

Engineer Ruba Zaqour, director of the Syrian Telecom branch in Hama, stated that the project is part of a broader effort to replace aging copper-based networks with modern fiber optic technology. This transition is expected to provide subscribers with stable, high-speed internet connectivity reaching up to 1 gigabit per second. Zaqour noted that the current phase of the project is designed to serve approximately 5,000 subscribers residing in the Al-Nasr neighborhood.

Regarding future expansion, Zaqour indicated that the company intends to scale the project throughout Hama city. Plans are already in place to launch three additional projects in various city districts in the near future. These efforts are part of a phased rollout strategy intended to eventually extend fiber optic services to the rural areas of the governorate.

This project aligns with the comprehensive national strategy announced by the Ministry of Communications and Technology in June 2025. The core objective of this ministry-led plan is to deliver Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) technology directly to residences and offices across Syria. The national plan for digital infrastructure development aims to connect approximately 85 percent of all households and institutions to the new fiber optic network within two years of its initial launch, reinforcing digital efficiency on a national scale.
