Syria Joins Makkah Convention to Combat Corruption

The Syrian government has signed a new package of treaties with the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), a move that underscores a diplomatic trend toward strengthening cooperation with regional organizations. Among these agreements is Syria’s formal accession to the Makkah Convention to Combat Corruption, one of the primary instruments adopted by OIC member states to promote integrity, transparency, and the coordination of joint efforts in fighting all forms of corruption.

This development carries significant administrative and legal implications for Syria. By joining the convention, the Syrian state commits its institutions to refining their legislative and regulatory frameworks to align with established international and regional standards. This is particularly relevant as the government seeks to improve the efficiency of public institutions, modernize oversight mechanisms, and combat illicit activities.

From a diplomatic perspective, the signing of this treaty package is part of Syria’s broader effort to bolster its relationships with Islamic nations and revitalize its engagement within OIC institutions. The accession is expected to pave the way for technical cooperation and the exchange of expertise between Syrian regulatory bodies and their counterparts in other signatory states, potentially contributing to an improved investment environment and the promotion of good governance principles.

The Makkah Convention serves as a legal framework designed to enhance international cooperation in preventing, detecting, and investigating corruption, as well as prosecuting offenders and recovering assets derived from corrupt acts. Syrian authorities are expected to begin developing executive programs to ensure that national procedures are consistent with the principles and provisions of the convention, a step intended to enhance the reliability of the country’s institutional performance.

This step comes as the Syrian government continues its efforts to restore regional and international relations and solidify its presence in various forums. It reflects a tangible shift in Syrian diplomatic strategy toward major regional organizations.
