Practical Magic 2 Stirs Critical and Audience Debate in Aleppo

Cinemas in the city of Aleppo have recently begun screening the new American fantasy film “Practical Magic 2.” The release marks the return of stars Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman to the screen, 28 years after the events of the original film. This screening is part of the ongoing engagement with global cinematic productions within the Syrian market.

Directed by Susan Bier with a screenplay by Akiva Goldsman, based on Alice Hoffman’s novel “The Book of Magic,” the film explores the persistent “family curse” that haunts the women of the Owens family and the men linked to them. The story follows sisters Sally (Bullock) and Gillian (Kidman) as they navigate challenges involving a new generation of the family: Sally’s daughters, Kyle, played by Joey King, and Antonia, played by Maisie Williams.

As the plot unfolds, the protagonists discover ancient secrets and manuscripts that force them to travel and confront supernatural threats in an attempt to break the curse once and for all while protecting the younger generation. The film poses questions regarding the moral struggle between the need to protect one’s family and the desire of younger generations to test their own supernatural abilities away from the constraints of the past.

Despite the clear chemistry between Bullock and Kidman and praise for their performances, the film has faced critical backlash regarding the coherence of its narrative. In a review for Rotten Tomatoes, critic Todd Gilchrist noted that while the film begins strongly by relying on nostalgia, it loses its pacing as the dramatic storylines involving the new generation expand. Furthermore, critics have pointed out that the excessive reliance on visual effects and a larger production budget compared to the original 1990s installment stripped the film of some of the visual warmth that characterized its predecessor.

A significant disparity has emerged in the film’s assessment between critics and the public. The work holds a low critical rating of 35%, while the audience approval rating has reached 93%. This gap highlights the contrast between critical scrutiny of the script’s structure and the emotional connection audiences feel toward the return of beloved characters.

This division in opinion places “Practical Magic 2” in the position of needing to prove that sequels can offer added artistic value beyond merely relying on audience nostalgia, ensuring a cohesive dramatic structure that merits attention in the current cinematic landscape.
