Interior Ministry and Rights Committee Discuss Legislative Reform

Interior Minister Anas Khattab held a meeting with the chair and members of the People’s Assembly’s Committee on Freedoms and Human Rights as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen cooperation between Syria’s governmental and legislative institutions. The discussion addressed various social and legal issues under the purview of the Ministry of Interior, with a focus on establishing effective mechanisms to improve institutional performance.

In a brief statement released via its official Telegram channel, the Syrian Ministry of Interior explained that the talks focused primarily on developing the legislative frameworks governing societal rights and freedoms within the country. During the meeting, both sides underscored the importance of these efforts in consolidating the foundations of security and civil peace. Furthermore, they emphasized the need to enhance the quality and range of services provided by the ministry to citizens across all Syrian governorates.

This meeting is part of a broader initiative to activate the role of standing committees within the Syrian People’s Assembly. The session follows the issuance of Decision No. 109 of 2026 by the Speaker of the People’s Assembly, Abdul Hamid Al-Awak, in August. That decision appointed members, chairs, and deputy chairs to the standing committees, following the final approval of the assembly’s internal regulations on July 30.

These ongoing discussions are viewed as part of an overarching mandate to foster integrated action between the executive and legislative branches. The goal is to ensure that laws are aligned with current societal requirements while strengthening the legal and administrative protections afforded to citizens.
