Homs: Karam Al-Loz National Hospital Hosts Breast Cancer Awareness Day

Karam Al-Loz National Hospital in Homs organized a specialized scientific day on Thursday, dedicated to raising awareness about breast cancer. The event was part of a broader effort to promote community health awareness regarding the critical importance of early detection.

The initiative, held as part of a series of activities during Pink Month, aimed to encourage women to proactively undergo periodic medical examinations and consult specialized health centers. The scientific day featured a series of lectures presented by the hospital’s medical staff, focusing on modern diagnostic and treatment methods.

Key topics discussed included the mechanisms of early breast cancer detection and the essential role of radiological examinations. Experts emphasized that ultrasound and mammogram technologies serve as the cornerstones of accurate diagnosis. Furthermore, the sessions covered the latest medical and surgical protocols for treating the disease, ranging from surgical interventions to chemotherapy, radiotherapy, hormonal, and immunotherapy treatments.

Nizar Rustum, the hospital director, stated that the primary goal of the event was to elevate community awareness and guide women toward timely medical check-ups. He noted that detecting cases in their early stages significantly increases the chances of recovery and improves the effectiveness of established treatment plans. Rustum also highlighted the essential role of family medicine and primary healthcare in the diagnostic and awareness-raising process.

Dr. Reem Al-Saleh, a third-year resident in general surgery, emphasized the necessity for women to commit to regular screenings. She stressed that screening is especially critical for women over the age of 40, as well as for younger women if they have a family history of the disease or other risk factors. Dr. Al-Saleh further urged women to consult a specialist immediately upon noticing any abnormal changes in the breast, ensuring that any potential health issues are addressed rapidly and effectively.

This initiative reflects the ongoing commitment of health institutions in Homs to support medical staff and enhance the diagnostic and therapeutic services available to the public. By fostering a culture of periodic check-ups as a fundamental preventive measure, such events strengthen the health system’s ability to navigate medical challenges and provide the best possible care for patients.
