Syrian Initiatives Promote Media Responsibility Against Disinformation

The Syrian media landscape has seen intensified calls for strengthening professional responsibility among journalists and content creators. These efforts arrive amidst mounting challenges posed by the proliferation of misinformation, which experts warn is having a direct impact on civil peace.
Specialists in information verification emphasize that countering disinformation requires a collaborative approach involving individuals, media institutions, and digital platforms to ensure a reliable information environment.
Ahmed Primo, director of a local fact-checking platform, highlighted that the danger of unverified news extends beyond mere inaccuracy. He noted that such information can negatively affect the social fabric and deepen divisions. Primo warned that the weaponization of misleading information to target specific groups can exacerbate societal tensions and incite violence. He stressed the necessity of adopting rigorous source verification methodologies, asserting that responsibility begins with the individual, who must verify content before sharing it, and extends to media institutions, which hold the trust of conveying the truth.
Adding to this perspective, content creation trainer Majd Maghribia highlighted the need to scrutinize the motives behind content publication. He cautioned against the trend of content creators prioritizing viral engagement—or ‘trends’—at the expense of accuracy and professional integrity. Maghribia emphasized that freedom of expression is inherently linked to moral and legal responsibilities. He urged creators to evaluate the potential repercussions of their posts before dissemination, particularly regarding sensitive political or religious topics. He warned that hasty publication can unjustly harm individuals or trigger social strife, the consequences of which may far outweigh any legal penalties.
These initiatives are part of the ‘Al-Kalima Tabni’ (Words Build) campaign, launched by the Syrian Media Academy in cooperation with the Syrian Ministry of Information and the United Nations Development Programme. The campaign aims to raise awareness regarding the dangers of incitement and hate speech, providing practical tools for the public and journalists to distinguish between verified information and misleading content.
Organizers of the campaign are focusing on fostering a culture of cross-referencing sources as a fundamental pillar for building societal awareness that protects civil peace. They maintain that responsible media practice serves as the first line of defense against efforts to manipulate public opinion. Experts hope that these collective efforts will contribute to crafting a more sober and professional national media discourse, thereby bolstering trust in media outlets and shielding society from the negative repercussions of rumors that could threaten its stability.
