Turkey Announces Talks for Regional Electricity Grid Link

Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Alparslan Bayraktar, has announced that discussions are underway for a major regional project to connect the electricity grids of Syria, Turkey, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia. According to the minister, this initiative is part of broader efforts to foster regional cooperation in the energy sector and address the challenges posed by current global energy market crises.

The announcement was made on the sidelines of the 25th World Petroleum Congress, currently taking place in Riyadh. Bayraktar emphasized that the creation of a cross-border electricity transmission line between the four nations represents a strategic move to navigate the uncertainties characterizing global energy markets. He underscored the importance of international collaboration in strengthening supply security and upgrading existing infrastructure.

Highlighting his country’s commitment to regional energy security, Bayraktar noted that Turkey has invested heavily in energy infrastructure over recent years, including the development of liquefied natural gas (LNG) regasification terminals. He stated that these investments are designed not only to satisfy Turkey’s domestic requirements but also to contribute to supply security on both regional and European levels, ensuring stable energy flow amidst ongoing global economic shifts.

The Turkish Energy Minister further warned of the potential economic consequences resulting from a prolonged contraction in global energy markets. Consequently, he stated that Turkey is prioritizing the expansion of its partnerships within this vital sector. He indicated that the scope of such cooperation may eventually extend beyond the proposed four-nation link to include other countries, such as Iraq, Libya, Pakistan, and Uzbekistan.

The World Petroleum Congress, hosted by Saudi Arabia for the first time since its inception in London in 1933, serves as an international platform for discussing energy challenges and future prospects. The event is scheduled to continue through November 15.
