Dusty Weather Warnings Issued for Eastern Syria

Provinces in eastern Syria, specifically Raqqa, Deir ez-Zor, and Al-Hasakah, have been experiencing unstable weather conditions since Monday, characterized by haze and significant dust accumulation. These conditions have led to a marked reduction in horizontal visibility across the region.

The current atmospheric instability, which began across Syria on Sunday afternoon, is expected to persist until early Tuesday morning. Meteorological forecasts indicate that this weather system is accompanied by scattered and sporadic thunderstorms. There is also a possibility of hail and strong downdrafts, which are contributing to the suspension of dust and sand in the air.

While the most severe effects of this weather pattern are concentrated in the eastern and southern regions, as well as the Al-Jazeera area and parts of central and northwestern Syria, coastal areas are expected to experience less intense impacts.

In response to these conditions, the Syria Civil Defence has issued urgent warnings to residents, particularly drivers and individuals suffering from respiratory illnesses. The organization has urged the public to exercise caution and adhere to preventative guidelines to mitigate the health and safety risks associated with the dust storms.

Key safety recommendations include keeping doors and windows tightly sealed to prevent dust from entering homes and limiting outdoor movement to essential travel only. Residents living in tents are advised to secure their shelters, dampen the surrounding ground, and place wet cloths at entrances or any openings where dust might penetrate.

For those who must go outdoors, the Syria Civil Defence recommends using medical masks or wet handkerchiefs and wearing glasses to protect the eyes from irritation and potential infection. Avoiding direct exposure to sunlight is also highly advised, particularly for children, the elderly, and pregnant women.

From a public health perspective, the organization warned asthma and sinusitis patients to avoid going outside during this period. It stressed the importance of frequent nasal rinsing and ensuring a supply of necessary medications for chronic conditions. Anyone experiencing an emergency health issue should seek help at the nearest medical facility immediately.

Furthermore, the Syria Civil Defence has directed specific advice to motorists. Due to significantly reduced visibility caused by the dust, drivers are urged to reduce their speed, keep vehicle headlights on, and ensure their vehicles are in good working condition before traveling to ensure safety on the roads in the affected provinces.
