Arab Science Conference Held in Germany to Strengthen Syrian Partnerships

The University of Cologne in Germany has hosted the third edition of the Arab Science Conference (ASSG 2026). The event, which drew a wide range of academics, researchers, and prominent figures, saw significant participation from both the Syrian and German communities, highlighting a mutual commitment to enhancing scientific cooperation.

The opening ceremony was attended by the Chargé d’Affaires of the Syrian Embassy in Berlin, Mohammad Baraa Shoukri, and the President of the University of Cologne. Their presence served as a formal testament to the growing interest in strengthening the foundations of scientific collaboration between the two nations.

Dr. Hani Harb, Vice President of the Syrian-German Council for Scientific Research, stated that this year’s conference holds particular significance due to the high-level official participation from both sides. He noted that this engagement serves as a positive indicator of fertile ground for building strategic partnerships within the Syrian higher education sector and for developing more robust mechanisms for academic exchange.

Dr. Razan Jassino, the official in charge of the conference, emphasized that the core objectives of the event are to engage Syrian professionals who hold advanced degrees and to establish an effective communication network among them. She added that the conference provides a unique opportunity to leverage the scientific and professional expertise that Syrian researchers have acquired abroad, aiming to integrate these skills into the service of educational and research institutions within Syria.

Professor Shady Mohammed highlighted the high level of interest expressed by the Syrian academics in attendance, noting their strong commitment to utilizing their expertise to support their home country. He expressed his hope that these collective efforts would facilitate the exchange of knowledge and technical expertise in a way that contributes to the advancement of national sectors and supports ongoing reconstruction efforts.

The conference is taking place over two days under the theme “Skills, Society and Science in Motion.” The agenda includes a series of intensive scientific sessions and specialized workshops covering vital sectors, including medicine, engineering, artificial intelligence, and the humanities. Furthermore, the event features dedicated discussion forums focused on social integration and the strengthening of academic cooperation between Syrian institutions and their German counterparts. These discussions aim to ensure the optimal utilization of available scientific resources to support development initiatives within Syria.
