Syria Participates in Regional Air Quality Meeting in Jordan

The Syrian Ministry of Local Administration and Environment is participating in the fourth meeting of the West Asia Air Quality Network (WAAQN), currently being held in the Jordanian city of Aqaba. The two-day event, organized by the United Nations Environment Programme, also includes a specialized capacity-building workshop.
According to the Ministry, the Syrian delegation is represented by Ahmed Al-Halabi, Director of the Ministry’s Laboratories Directorate. The meeting serves as a platform for regional cooperation among West Asian nations, focusing on the exchange of national expertise regarding the development of air quality monitoring systems and the improvement of data accuracy and technical standards within the sector.
Technical sessions during the accompanying capacity-building workshop are set to cover several critical areas, including the established criteria for selecting monitoring station sites and the ongoing development of the Air Quality Index (AQI). Participants will also discuss methodologies for assessing pollution sources, the preparation of emissions inventories, and environmental forecasting mechanisms designed to support the protection of ecosystems.
Syria’s participation in these discussions supports national efforts to establish an integrated system for managing air quality. The Ministry aims to expand existing monitoring networks and utilize modern data analysis methodologies to bolster environmental decision-making processes.
This initiative aligns with the Ministry of Local Administration and Environment’s broader strategic plan to enhance environmental performance and develop national oversight tools in accordance with international standards. On May 14, the Ministry launched the first phase of the National Program for Air Pollution Monitoring. The program is designed to monitor and analyze air pollutants and provide precise scientific data to facilitate evidence-based decision-making, thereby contributing to the protection of the Syrian environment.
