Damascus Seminar Explores Syrian-German Academic Cooperation

A comprehensive symposium titled “Horizons of Syrian-German Academic Cooperation” was held recently at the National Library in Damascus. Organized by the SciKeys organization, the event aimed to highlight scholarship and research programs available to Syrian academics and researchers through the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).
Participants discussed the latest portfolio of research grants offered by the German organization. A key focus of the discussion was the activation of “visiting professor” programs, which are designed to facilitate deeper knowledge exchange. The seminar also explored methods for establishing long-term scientific partnerships between Syrian universities and their German counterparts, with the ultimate goal of advancing higher education standards within Syria.
Academic expert Omar Jabi addressed the assembly, explaining that the DAAD has launched a series of initiatives aimed at reconnecting Syrian educational institutions with those in Germany. Jabi noted that these opportunities are available across a wide academic spectrum, ranging from bachelor’s and master’s degree candidates to doctoral and post-doctoral researchers seeking to complete portions of their studies in Germany. Furthermore, Jabi highlighted a March 2026 report issued by the DAAD, which featured an assessment of the Syrian academic landscape conducted in collaboration with Syrian researchers in Germany. The report focuses on supporting reconstruction efforts by strengthening the role of educational institutions.
Marwa Al-Sharif, Vice Chairperson of SciKeys, emphasized the necessity of effective communication between Syrian and German universities to fully leverage available grants and programs. She affirmed that SciKeys is prepared to act as a bridge, facilitating these partnerships and supporting joint academic projects.
Firas Barou, Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy at Al-Sham Private University, also spoke at the event, underscoring the serious commitment of Syrian universities to developing research relations with German institutions. Barou highlighted the vital role of scientific research and digital transformation in enhancing academic efficiency, noting that digitization helps bridge geographical distances while ensuring transparency in the documentation of research findings.
SciKeys is a non-governmental, volunteer-led organization established to connect Syrian academics both at home and abroad. Its primary mission is to support the development of scientific research and higher education in Syria. Last year, the organization opened its first office in the country, situated within the Faculty of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering at the University of Damascus.
