Latakia Launches Major Infrastructure and Entrance Redevelopment

The Latakia City Council, in collaboration with the executing firm Elite Global, has officially launched a major project aimed at the rehabilitation and development of the city’s main entrance. The initiative is part of a broader strategic plan designed to enhance the governorate’s infrastructure and improve its urban landscape.
Hussam Khoury, the Director of Services and Maintenance at the Latakia City Council, explained that the scope of the project spans from the city’s protection checkpoint at the entrance, extending through the Agriculture and University roundabouts, and reaching the Haroun roundabout. Khoury noted that the project involves comprehensive infrastructure maintenance, including the rehabilitation of roads, pedestrian walkways, and sidewalks. Furthermore, the plan addresses the optimization of bus stops and the implementation of solutions to resolve existing traffic flow challenges.
The development plan also encompasses the maintenance of green spaces and the enhancement of the city’s key roundabouts. Work has already commenced, with crews from the Parks Department focusing their initial efforts on the university roundabout. As part of these operations, several trees are being relocated to new sites, while specific shrubs and evergreen perennials are being moved to dedicated nurseries for propagation and future planting.
Khoury emphasized that the project, which officially began yesterday, is intended to establish a distinct visual identity for the main thoroughfare that aligns with the historic character and authenticity of Latakia. A primary goal of the renovation is to remove various forms of visual pollution that have detracted from the city’s aesthetic appeal.
According to the Director, this initiative represents the first phase in a series of planned projects aimed at upgrading the city’s gateways and raising the quality of public services. These efforts are expected to ensure smoother traffic circulation and bolster the overall urban character of the city. Ultimately, this move is part of the Latakia City Council’s ongoing commitment to modernizing service facilities and developing essential infrastructure to improve the quality of life for residents and facilitate better transport and movement within one of Syria’s most significant coastal cities.
