Syria to Begin New National ID Card Registration in Mid-2027

Syria’s Minister of Interior has announced that the ministry is intensifying efforts to finalize the technical and logistical preparations required for the launch of the new national identity card project. According to current projections, centers are expected to be ready to process citizen applications following the first quarter of 2027.
Speaking during the inauguration of two new civil registry offices in Hama province, the minister revealed that the government finalized a formal contract approximately 20 days ago with a specialized firm experienced in identity card production. This agreement is a central component of an integrated plan to modernize the nation’s personal documentation system. The minister emphasized that the actual issuance of the cards will follow the initial registration phase, adhering to a predefined project timeline.
Regarding the required infrastructure, the minister explained that the ministry is operating along several parallel tracks. This includes the procurement and supply of specialized technical equipment necessary for the project. Furthermore, the ministry is currently preparing dedicated registration centers—separate from existing civil registry offices—to ensure maximum efficiency in collecting biometric data, personal features, and high-resolution digital imaging.
The broader action plan also includes comprehensive training for staff on the new systems. The ministry aims to fulfill all requirements stipulated in the contract with the implementation firm over the coming year, ensuring that all infrastructure is fully operational before the scheduled start of registration.
During his visit to the civil registry directorate in Hama, the minister addressed the opening of the two new offices, stating that the move is part of the ministry’s strategy to reduce overcrowding and streamline services for citizens. He noted that the ministry is prioritizing the rehabilitation of civil registry buildings and facilities that have suffered from poor infrastructure. Currently, maintenance and renovation works are underway at more than 200 Ministry of Interior sites across various Syrian provinces.
Concluding his tour, the minister praised the progress of work at the Hama directorate. He affirmed that ongoing updates to civil registry centers contribute directly to providing better services to citizens, ensuring that their transactions are completed with speed and ease. He added that these efforts are fundamental to improving the service performance of Syrian state institutions.
