New Maritime High School to Open in Arwad Island
Tartus Governor Ahmed Al-Shami and the Head of the General Authority for Ports and Customs, Qutaiba Badawi, have reached an agreement to open a maritime high school on Arwad Island during the current academic year. This initiative is part of broader efforts by the Tartus governorate to support the vocational education sector and improve local service infrastructure.
The decision aims to address the specific needs of Arwad’s residents by providing a specialized vocational curriculum that aligns with the island’s unique geography and its deep-rooted maritime heritage. Officials expect this step to significantly reduce the financial burden and logistical challenges faced by students and their families, allowing youth to pursue high-quality vocational education closer to home.
Beyond the immediate educational benefits, the initiative is part of a strategic effort to develop a local workforce trained for the maritime transport industry. By fostering specialized skills, the school aims to open new career prospects for the island’s youth and supply the labor market with the expertise required for this vital sector.
During their meeting, Governor Al-Shami and Badawi also discussed ongoing efforts to develop critical facilities under the governorate’s jurisdiction. The Head of the General Authority for Ports and Customs inspected the infrastructure rehabilitation works underway at the Port of Tartus, which are designed to increase the facility’s operational readiness and strengthen its economic role.
In a related context, the tour included an inspection of the Arida and Dabbousiya border crossings with Lebanon. The visit focused on reviewing the final stages of infrastructure and facility rehabilitation at both crossings. These efforts are part of ongoing preparations to resume full operations at both sites in the near future, ensuring the smooth flow of movement and enhancing the quality of services provided at the governorate’s border points.
