2,000 Cubic Meters of Debris Cleared in Harran al-Awamid

The local council of Harran al-Awamid in the Rif Dimashq countryside announced on Wednesday the completion of a major debris removal operation. Approximately 2,000 cubic meters of rubble and waste have been cleared as part of a comprehensive plan to improve local service delivery and strengthen stability in the area.

The cleanup efforts, which began on September 20, were initiated by local authorities to mitigate risks associated with debris accumulation, particularly near schools, government buildings, and major thoroughfares.

In a statement, the head of the local council, Abdul Rahman Maqdah, explained that the operation was carried out in direct response to the needs of the local population. Maqdah noted that the accumulated rubble had obstructed the movement of residents and students and posed significant environmental and health risks. Concerns were particularly raised regarding the presence of snakes and scorpions, which were using the debris piles as habitats. Maqdah confirmed that work crews are continuing their efforts to clean the most severely affected areas, adding that the next phase of the project will focus on fully opening vital roads to ensure the smooth flow of traffic.

The council head also addressed the process for managing requests from citizens seeking to clear rubble from in front of their damaged homes. He emphasized that the municipality has established a clear legal mechanism to handle these requests in accordance with safety regulations.

This initiative is part of broader reconstruction efforts led by the Rif Dimashq Governorate to rehabilitate essential infrastructure. Estimates suggest that the level of destruction in the town ranges between 75 and 80 percent, making the removal of rubble a top priority to pave the way for recovery and the restoration of basic services.

These efforts reflect a local government strategy aimed at improving the service environment in areas heavily impacted by years of crisis. The goal is to provide a safe and suitable environment for residents, facilitate a return to normal life in Harran al-Awamid, and prioritize the restoration of public infrastructure as a fundamental pillar of the region’s recovery strategy.
