US Special Envoy Affirms Golan Heights is Syrian Territory
In a recent statement that reinforces the international consensus regarding the status of the Golan Heights, the United States Special Presidential Envoy for Syria and Iraq, Thomas Barak, affirmed that the territory is legally recognized as belonging to Syria. Speaking in an interview with the Clash Report platform, Envoy Barak underscored that the continued presence of Israeli forces in the region stands in direct contradiction to international law and established United Nations mandates.
Barak highlighted that the status of the Golan Heights remains governed by international agreements and UN resolutions which designate the area as Syrian sovereign territory. This stance reiterates the long-standing international position that the Israeli occupation of the territory is not recognized, aligning with the framework set forth by the United Nations to address the conflict in the region.
The territorial status of the Golan Heights has been the subject of significant international scrutiny for decades. Central to this legal discourse is UN Security Council Resolution 497, which was adopted unanimously on December 17, 1981. This resolution declared that the Israeli decision to impose its laws, jurisdiction, and administration on the occupied Golan Heights was null, void, and without international legal effect. The resolution called upon Israel to rescind its actions and respect the internationally recognized boundaries.
The recent remarks by the US Envoy follow a high-level diplomatic appeal made by the Syrian government. On April 29, 2025, during a session of the United Nations Security Council, Syrian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Assad Hassan Al-Sharaa, reiterated his government’s firm demand for the enforcement of Resolution 497. Al-Sharaa emphasized the necessity for a complete Israeli withdrawal from the Golan Heights to the lines held as of June 4, 1967.
The Syrian government maintains that the restoration of its sovereignty over the Golan is a fundamental requirement for regional stability and adherence to international law. As the debate over the territory continues within diplomatic circles, the explicit restatement of these principles by international actors remains a focal point for Damascus in its efforts to reclaim the occupied territory and enforce the implementation of UN-backed resolutions.
